Flying Foxes

Flying Fox Invasion

For weeks we have endured the all night screeching and fluttering of flying foxes in the tree next door. Suddenly, after the first decent frost, all seems quiet again. Have the blossoms finished or has the cold driven them off? At last a decent night's peace!
We could hear the flying foxes at many locations around our early delivery run. Something must have changed to cause them to move into town. We never found out exactly what caused them to be in so many locations in small camps. We had never experienced this before.

Presently there is a food shortage across the whole of the flying-fox range. Smaller camps, closer to food, mean less energy expended when foraging. The shortage also means they are in places where circumstances are harder for them - ie it's too cold.

In Sydney we have reports of individual animals roosting away from camps during the day - it's a harsh season for sure.
